The origins of the Špilberk Castle date to the 13th century and was built by King Ottokar II of Bohemia, also known as the Iron and Golden King. Špilberk Castle would serve as a royal residence and become the seat of the Moravian margraves until the 14th century.
Špilberk Castle: The Fortress
The strategic importance of Špilberk Castle is evident by the number of times it held out would-be invaders. The city of Brno was sieged twice unsuccessfully by The Hussites in 1428 and 1430 during the Hussite Wars.
However, the most significant siege in the city’s history would take place in 1645 during the Thirty Years’ War when Brno came under siege by Swedish forces who were defeated at the bastion walls under the watchful eyes standing guard on the ramparts.

Ticket Office:
The ticket office opens at 9:00, from where you can visit the courtyard and merchandise shop. Sightseeing tours start at 9:00 until the castle closes at 18:00.
