Features of Brno

Brno sits within the diverging points of the Svratka River in the West and the Svitava River in the East. On the left bank of the Svratka, you will find the Aquapark Kohoutovice, surrounded by a lush green forest protected under the Natura 2000 program.

Špilberk Castle

Built-in the 13th century by Ottokar II of Bohemia, the Špilberk Castle changed functions throughout its history. Initially used as a fortress overlooking the city, it was later used as a barracks and prison housing some of Europe’s most notorious criminals. Today the Špilberk Castle functions as a museum and serves theatrical plays to guests. The castle’s elevated position on top of the hill overlooks much of the Brno, which you can observe 360 from the castle watch tower and its bastion fortifications. At night Špilberk Castle and the surrounding buildings in the Park of Špilberk Castle light up, giving a spectacular view from the city below.

Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul

Located on Petrov Hill, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, commonly referred to by locals as Petrov, is a roman catholic church dating to the 14th century. The building has undergone a list of renovations due to extensive damage caused throughout its lifetime. The most notable additions are its two 84 meters high towers.

Náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square)

The Náměstí Svobody is the main city square and focal point to start your exploration of Brno. The square is surrounded by pleasantly coloured buildings dating over 400 years, restaurants, cafes and places to shop. The most notable landmark in Freedom Square is the baroque-style plague column dedicated to the plague outbreak in Brno. To the right of the column, you will find modern fountains. Opposite these fountains, you see the bullet-shaped black Astronomical Clock of Brno, dedicated to the victory of the city’s people over the Swedish army that besieged Brno between 3 May to 23 August 1645.

The Brno Tourist information centre is in the Old Town Hall Building. This building also has its own observation tower, gallery and exhibitions you can visit.

The best time to visit Brno, Czechia, depends on your preferences and the type of activities you plan to engage in. If you are looking for warmer temperatures then anywhere from July to September is perfect as weather is mild, and outdoor activities are enjoyable.

Spring (March, April, May):

Weather: Mild temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F).
Events: Spring brings various cultural events, festivals, and outdoor activities.

Summer (June, July, August):

Weather: Warmer temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F).
Events: Summer is a popular time for outdoor events and festivals. However, it can be more crowded with tourists.

Autumn (September, October, November):

Weather: Mild temperatures similar to spring, ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F).
Scenery: The fall foliage can be beautiful, and the city is less crowded compared to the summer.

Winter (December, January, February):

Weather: Cold temperatures ranging from -5°C to 5°C (23°F to 41°F).
Activities: Winter sports enthusiasts may enjoy nearby ski resorts, but the city itself may have fewer outdoor activities.

Keep in mind that weather conditions can vary, and personal preferences play a role in choosing the best time to visit. If you enjoy festivals and outdoor events, summer might be ideal, but if you prefer milder weather and fewer crowds, spring and fall could be more suitable.
